			About New Orleans

New Orleans is one of America’s most famous cities. Its nightlife is legendary, it attracts thousands of visitors annually for the Mardi Gras festival, it is the birthplace of jazz music and the world-famous Mississippi River flows right through it.

It was founded in 1718 when Jean Baptiste le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville (Governor of Louisiana) plotted it. Over the following 100 years it was tossed back and forth between the French and Spanish until it was officially named an American city in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase.

Due to its location so close to the mouth of the Mississippi it soon became an important port. This is one industry which has stayed with the city as it is still a major port of entry to America, thus making it one of southern America’s leading industrial centres.
